DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Santo Domingo, On and off-site from 2008 to present

Technical advisor to the National AIDS Control Program (COPRESIDA , CONHIVSIDA) to plan, implement and analyze data from HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) biological and behavioral surveys (BBS) among female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSM) and drug users (DU) in four provinces in 2008 (Round 1) and in five provinces in 2012 (Round 2) using Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS). Used multiplier methods to estimate population sizes. Developed materials to assess the feasibility of RDS and to define social network properties. Developed survey protocol, study materials and questionnaires. Trained on analyzing and interpreting RDS data and co-authored reports. Published findings in peer reviewed journal.


VIETNAM

Hanoi; On and off-site 2004 to Present

Provided technical assistance on behalf of CDC Vietnam to the Vietnam Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to design, plan, implement and analyze data from an HIV BBS using RDS among FSW and people who inject drugs (PWID) in Hanoi, Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City in 2004. Developed materials to conduct formative assessment for RDS feasibility and to define social network properties. Developed survey protocol, questionnaires and study materials. Trained on analyzing and interpreting RDS data. Published findings in peer reviewed journal. Advised the Hanoi CDC office and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology to initiate the use of RDS for routine sentinel surveillance. Trained local staff in Hay Tay and Thai Binh provinces on RDS data management. Provide technical assistance to on-going BBS survey implementation and data analysis.


TANZANIA

Dar es Salaam; On and off-site 2008 to 2011

SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO

Belgrade and Podgorica; On and off-site 2006

Provided technical assistance to Imperial College School of Medicine to plan and implement HIV BBS using RDS study among FSW and PWID. Conducted focus groups and key informant interviews with PWID and FSW and organizations working with these groups to assess the feasibility of using RDS. Led workshop on RDS methods for local NGOs, UNDP and Ministry of Health staff. Assessed the use of RDS in these populations and coordinated logistics for biological testing and pre and post test counseling. Developed survey protocol, questionnaires and study materials. Provided training on analyzing and interpreting RDS data and co-authored report. Developed and co-presented findings for presentation at a dissemination meeting among ministry of health officials, the religious community, health policy makers and NGOs working with high-risk populations. using RDS Methods in Croatia” in preparation to implement surveys of HIV risk factors among key populations at risk for HIV exposure. Provided technical assistance to plan and implement an HIV BBS using RDS methods among MSM.

Provided technical assistance and training to analyze HIV/STI BBS data using RDSAT among FSW and MSM in San Salvador, Sonsonate and San Miguel. 

 

ZAMBIA

Lusaka; On-site 2007

Provided technical assistance to the CDC Zambia office to prepare and implement an HIV/STI BBS using RDS among MSM. Developed and presented training workshop to field staff on RDS methods, preparation, management and implementation. Developed RDS management and field materials.


THAILAND

Bangkok and Chiang Rai; On and off-site 2007

Provided technical assistance to the CDC Thailand office to prepare, implement and analyze data for an HIV/STI BBS using RDS among FSW in Chaing Rai and Bangkok. Developed materials and designed a recruitment strategy to sample FSWs’ clients through RDS. Developed and presented training workshop to field staff on RDS methods, preparation, management and implementation. Developed management and field materials. Supervised staff during data collection and provided mentoring and training to CDC Epidemiologist and EIS officers. Published findings in peer reviewed journal.

 

HONDURAS

Off-site for Guatemala CDC Office 2007

Coded and formatted databases and analyzed data for the Honduras HIV/STI BBS of MSM in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba and FSW in Comayagua, Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba for CDC and National reports. Interpreted data and wrote up findings for publication in peer reviewed journals.

 

SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town; On and off-site 2006 to 2007

Provided technical assistance to South Africa Medical Research Center (MRC) and Cape Town Department of Health to prepare and implement a pilot HIV BBS using RDS among ‘high risk heterosexual men’ in Khayelitsha Township. Developed and presented training workshop to field staff on RDS methods, preparation, management and implementation. Set up a data and field management program and supervised staff during data collection. Led a workshop on RDS data analysis to MRC staff and conducted analysis, interpreted data and wrote up findings for publication in peer reviewed journals. 

 

UNITED STATES

Atlanta, Georgia; On and off-site 2004 to Present

Conducted workshop on RDSAT entitled “Using RDSATv5.6 for Analysis of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance among IDUs (NHBS-IDU) Data," to statisticians, field supervisors and data entry specialists involved in nationwide RDS studies among PWID. Presented findings from the RDS BBS among FSW and PWID conducted in Vietnam for CDC/GAP staff. Reviewed, cleaned and coded RDS databases and conducted analysis to produce findings for publication in peer reviewed journals. Develop technical manuals on sampling and analysis. 

 

GUATEMALA

Guatemala City; On and off-site 2004-2006

Developed and led a workshop on RDSAT to statisticians, field supervisors and data entry specialists involved in RDS surveys among MSM and FSW in Central America. Provided technical advice for HIV/STI BBS using RDS planned for El Salvador. Co-facilitated a workshop in Spanish “Second Generation Surveillance in HIV/AIDS in Central America” to representatives from Central America. Facilitated small group discussions on HIV BBS design, Time location and RDS sampling and biological testing.  

 

CARIBBEAN

Trinidad; St. Vincent; Antigua; On and off-site 2007

Provided technical assistance and training to Caribbean Epidemiological Center (CAREC) to plan, design and implement a pilot HIV/STI BBS among MSM and FSW in St. Vincent and Antigua using RDS. Developed questionnaires and field management materials. Developed and presented a training workshop to field staff on RDS methods, preparation, management and implementation. Supervised the initiation and data collection. 

 

BRAZIL

Brasilia; On and off-site 2004 to 2006

Co-facilitated with Tulane University, CDC/GAP and Cornell University, a workshop on “Sampling methods for most at risk populations”. Developed and led presentation on RDS methods. Participated in planning meetings with CDC/GAP and Ministry of Health staff to assess the use of RDS vs. time venue sampling methods to conduct large scale HIV BBSS in Brazil. Led training on “developing protocols to implement HIV BBSS using RDS methods in Brazil” and worked with representatives from six states in Brazil to develop these protocols. Developed and provided an RDS protocol template and field guidelines.

 

CAMBODIA

Siem Reap; October 2-6, 2004; June 2012

Participated in “The Asia Regional meeting on HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment for Drug Users in Asia”. Wrote up meeting notes for a final report to be distributed to all attendees. Co-facilitated group work sessions on planning strategies to address IDU in the region. Presented at the "3rd Regional Asia Surveillance Workshop". 


Hard-To-Reach Population Methods Research Group (HPMRG)


Off-site 2010 to present

Co-founded HPMRG (www.hpmrg.org), a collaborative interdisciplinary group of researchers from several universities, to advance the science of adaptive sampling methods among hard to reach populations.  Co-write peer reviewed journal articles to improve inference, diagnostics and methodology around respondent driven sampling.  Co-produced RDS Analyst (RDS-A), a software package for the analysis of RDS data using recent advances in statistical methods. 


National AIDS Control Program


MADAGASCAR

Antananarivo; On and off-site 2010 to present.

Provided technical assistance to design, plan, implement and analyze data from an HIV/STI BBS using RDS among MSM and PWID in several cities in Madagascar. Co-developed survey protocol, questionnaires and study materials. Provided training on analyzing and interpreting RDS data. 

 

MAURITIUS

Port Louis; On and off-site 2009 to 2013

With funding from the UN office of drug control, provided technical assistance to design, plan, implement and analyze data from an HIV/STI BBS using RDS PWID (2009 and 2011), FSW (2010 and 2012), and MSM (2010 and 2012). Provided technical advice on the study protocols, questionnaires, consent forms and other study materials. Supervised data collection. Provided training on data analysis with RDS Analyst. Conducted analysis, population size estimations and wrote up final reports of findings. Published findings in peer reviewed journals.

In conjuction with the UN office of drug control and the Indian Ocean Commission, provided technical assistance to design, plan, implement and analyze data from an HIV/STI BBS using RDS among PWID (2011) and MSM (2010). Developed materials for formative assessment to determine RDS feasibility and define social network properties. Developed survey protocol, questionnaires and study materials. Trained on analyzing and interpreting RDS data. Oversaw data collection. Conducted analysis, population size estimation and wrote up final reports of findings.

            Co-facilitated "Experts Meeting on Methodologies for Obtaining Strategic Information on Young People at                     Higher Risk of HIV Exposure" in Bangkok. Researched and wrote up Guidance on sampling young                                 key populations at risk for HIV exposure. Led a skills building workshop on using RDS among young key                         populations at the 11th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific and launched guidelines.


            Provided technical assistance for the planning, implementation of and analysis of data from RDS surveys                     conducted among young key populations (MSM, migrants and FSW) in Thailand.

CROATIA
Zagreb; On and off-site 2006 to 2011

Developed and presented a training course to UNDP, University of Zagreb, interviewers and HIV counsellors on the study protocol, RDS methods and how to manage the RDS field sites and interviews and coupon recruitment process.  Provided technical assistance to conduct a BBS among MSM in Zagreb using RDS. Supervised field staff and survey implementation, including the selection and interviewing of seeds and first wave participants.

Developed and presented a workshop on RDSAT to Asia regional FHI staff. Met with CDC staff to discuss their study protocol for an upcoming RDS study among FSW in Bangkok.

Presented  abstract on “Using RDS to access hard-to-reach FSW in Vietnam.” Met with FHI and other representatives to discuss plans for upcoming RDS surveys.

 

CARIBBEAN

Provided training and technical assistance on RDS methods and implementation to study supervisors for round 1 of the HIV BBS in the Eastern Caribbean States of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua/Barbuda, St. Kitts/Nevis, Dominica, and St. Lucia.
