Bio-behavioral surveillance surveys

Sampling key populations at higher risk of HIV exposure

The focus of my work is on innovative sampling and population size estimation techniques among hard-to-reach populations, including people who inject drugs, sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender persons, youth and migrants.

For the past twenty years, I have worked as an independent consultant providing training on and technical assistance for planning and implementing surveys to measure HIV and other infections (TB, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections [STI]) prevalence and behaviors and experiences (i.e., HIV testing, health services coverage, sexual and drug use risks, stigma and discrimination, HIV/STI knowledge, etc.) among vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations. I have provided technical assistance to over 40 countries to conduct more than 300 surveys using respondent driven sampling (RDS), Time Location Sampling (TLS) and other sampling methods. I have also utilized numerous population size estimation techniques including capture-recapture, unique object and service multipliers, network scale-up and the Successive Sampling PSE.
